Special Collection Celebrating Professor John Irvine CBE

Scope

JPhys Energy is honoured to launch a special collection in celebration of its inaugural Editor-in-Chief, Professor John Irvine, who has led the journal from 2018-24.

In recognition of Professor Irvine’s world-leading contributions to the science of energy materials, especially fuel cell and energy conversion technologies, this special collection will cover a large breadth of topics including electrochemistry, batteries, fuel cells, heterogeneous catalysis, hydrogen, materials, photochemistry and solid state ionics.

We cordially invite submissions from Professor Irvine’s colleagues, collaborators past and present, and alumni – and anyone that has been inspired by the research of the JTSI group at St Andrews more generally.

Authors are welcome to submit original research, review articles and perspectives, furnishing the community with a unique collection that reflects Prof Irvine’s scientific contribution, leadership and influence in the field, his pivotal role in supporting and inspiring exceptional scientists, and his part in establishing JPhys Energy as a truly interdisciplinary venue for the energy research community.

Submission process

We encourage submissions from all authors whose work fits with the scope of this focus collection. The collection will also feature invited contributions. All articles will be subject to the same review process as regular submissions to the journal. Authors are invited to contact the journal team directly, to discuss the suitability of their work prior to submission.

Please submit your article via our online submission form. You should submit the appropriate article type for your submission then choose ‘Special Collection Celebrating Professor John Irvine CBE’ from the drop-down menu.

Deadline for submissions

Submissions will be welcomed until 30 September 2025, although earlier contributions are encouraged. Articles will be published on acceptance without being delayed by other papers in the collection.

Peer review

All special collection articles will be peer reviewed in the same manner and to the same high standard as regular issue articles, with the peer review overseen and administered by our in-house journal editorial team. Find out more about peer review at IOP Publishing.
